  1. I am Brett. I am majoring in Communication with my career choice in mind. I feel having a solid foundation in communication skills and studies will provide an important knowledge base for understanding and effectively communicating in the business field. Communication skills are at the top of every employer's list. I feel communication in the Real Estate sales field is paramount.

Maybe one of the most important things I have learned in college is to be able to laugh at myself. This allows me to jump into new and exciting situations, not afraid to make a mistake, I'm always looking for new ways to learn and experience the world. In 5 years, I see myself helping make people's dreams come true. I have a passion for customer service, exceeding expectations and developing lasting relationships with friends, family, customers and clients. I plan to continue in the field of Real Estate, working to attain the most knowledge and education to arm myself with the tools to best serve my clients. I am excited about a career path that will evolve and grow as I work toward it. I am looking to pursue creative career paths that excite me, as I plan and work with my goals in mind.

  2. My name is Kacie. I am majoring in General Communication because I enjoy learning about communication and interactions between individuals and how this influences our lives and relationships.

The most important thing I have learned from UNI so far is to try to new things. From classes to clubs to jobs, trying new things is a way to find what you are good at and what you enjoy. Taking these risks also helps you to understand that you may not enjoy what you originially thought you had. When I first came to college, I thought I wanted to be a dentist. I quickly found out that this was not for me and found a home within the Communication department.

In five years, I hope to be working with a non- profit organization and doing some good for the community. I hope to work with the American Cancer Society and set up their charity events. My passions include running and being with the people I love. I like to make a positive difference and try to be as helpful as I can be.

  3. My name is Ryan and I'm majoring in Communication because the classes are what best fit me and my interests. I struggled for a long time to select a major, and after visiting with a counselor in Des Moines I decided Communication was for me, and it has worked out great. I love public speaking, which is a skill I am able to work on regularly within the comm. department, and I also have come to be very interested in the gender and relationship studies that are involved in many of my classes.

The most important thing I've learned thus far at UNI is the ability to think critically, and Media Literacy helped me make tremendous strides in this area. Having the ability to analyze the information we consume, rather than simply mindlessly consuming it, is an important skill to have. Many other disciplines at UNI do not touch upon critical thinking, and it is an aspect of Communication that I have really come to enjoy.

I'm currently studying for the Law School Admissions Test, and am planning on taking it in October. I will apply for law school at the University of Iowa, Creighton, Drake, and others, but I would like to keep my options open to possibilities outside of graduate school. I interned at a captive insurance consulting firm this summer called Innovative Captive Strategies and loved it. Unfortunately, ICS is likely not interested in a graduate with a degree in Communication Studies, but perhaps if I were to attend law school they may be more interested in hiring me.

Outside of school and the professional world I love sports. My favorite sport to play is golf, and my favorite to watch is Iowa Hawkeye college football. I also like singing, and used to be very involved in several choirs. Other than that, I like hanging out with friends, listening to music, and watching great TV shows like It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Man vs. Wild with Bear Grylls.

  4. I am Caitlin! I am majoring in General Communication because I love talking and interacting with new and known people. I really enjoy learning about how people interact with one another and why they are the way that they are. I found that General Communication offered classes that were very interesting to me so now I am pursing that degree.

The most important thing I have learned at UNI, is to be aware of all the "bullshit" around me. I used to be very naive and only the saw the good in people and basically everything. UNI and more specifically, Media Lit, opened my eyes to the pressures and "standards" we have in our society today.

In five years I want to be selling Biotechnology products to labs and major corporations. I want to use my communication education to be a success in this new industry. I have already obtained an A.A.S. Biotechnology, so I think my two degrees could make me a good fit for this type of position. I also want to be involved more with my community.

I'm not going to lie, I am passionate about clothes and fashion. I love to shop and find ways of expressing myself through my "look". I am passionate about my family and friends and need to spend time with them. I am talented in my ability to sell basically anything. I am also talented in my ability to make people feel comfortable.

  5. I'm Heather! I'm majoring in General Communications with a Public Relations minor because I decided late last year that I wanted the ability to pursue a masters in Counseling. Although I enjoy Public Relations it's definitely not something I'm passionate about and I wanted the ability to pursue a career in counseling.

The Most important thing I've learned thus far at UNI is Associated Press style. This information has been vitally important in internships, class, and extra-circular organizations.

In five years I want to be in a hut somewhere in the Middle East or Asia writing a language which has never been written before. This would then allow me to translate the Bible, inform the tribe how to better care for themselves, and learn more about different languages.

My Passion: To Know Jesus Christ better and make Him known. Along with that, I love China and Pakistan along with all of Asia and the Middle East. Although UNI usually gets a bad rap for not being very diverse I absolutely love getting to know international students and hearing about their cultures, beliefs, and life!

  6. My name is Kate Elliott, I'm a graduate student. My emphasis is in Communication Education. Before UNI, I earned a B.A. in Communication Studies with an emphasis in Speech Communication from Wartburg as well as a B.A. in Communication Arts with an emphasis in Electronic Media. I also completed the leadership certification at Wartburg. Arriving as a freshman in college, I wanted to be on the radio when I "grew up." It didn't take me long to make my dream happen. For almost four years I worked for Cumulus Media, eventually doing the midday show on Q92.3, the night show on 97.7, and picking up weekend shifts on 98.5. The more I learned at college, the more I realized that radio was fun, but not for me. Wartburg talks a lot about vocation, and I felt that I had found my calling in teaching. I'm working on my M.A. in Communication Education so that I can continue to teach and share my passion for different areas within the communication realm. Currently, I am a GTA for Oral Communication at UNI as well as an instructor at Hawkeye Community College.

The most important thing I have learned (and continue to learn) at UNI is to be myself - as cliche as that sounds. It is very easy for me to get intimidated when I look at my classmates' strengths and skills and compare them to my own. It can be easy to forget to look at one's own assets and skills. Just value your classmates for what they can contribute to the conversation or atmosphere and recognize that you bring something to the table as well, just in a different way.

In 5 years I hope to have found a permanent job as an instructor. Eventually, I would really like to be tenure track at a college or university, but I don't have any desire to get my PhD. I despise writing and in-depth research. I see myself as an instructor of general courses in the future - I'll never be leading a class about theory!

Photography helps pay my rent, and it makes me happy. It's just a hobby, and I've never taken a class, but you can check out my website if you want to. It's www.kateelliottphotojournalism.com.

  7. 20 YR OLD JUNIOR SEEKING EASY A:
The name's Lauren. I'm 20 years old and I'm a junior. Learn to laugh at yourself or life isn't worth it. Life is a lot more fun when you accept that. I appreciate the beautiful things and I like to find beauty in things others don't. Also, I find something to laugh at every day. Life and laughter are beautiful to me.

My major of choice is Graphic Technologies (formerly Graphic Communications) because I'm interested in careers that are carried out online. Although I'm unsure about exactly what I WANT to do, I know exactly what I DON'T want to do. Thus, I'm in the right major by process of elimination.

The most important thing I've learned at UNI so far is that you are never really prepared. Things happen, situations change, and you can't prepare for everything, no matter what you do.

Look at UNI, then to me, back at UNI, now back to me. I'm on a blog. (Old Spice, anyone?) In five years I hope to be doing something I love, living somewhere I love and surrounded by the people I love. That's all I can ask for. As for passions and talents, I've taken a liking to writing poems when I feel inspired. I also love geocaching! Look it up. It's fun. http://www.geocaching.com/

  8. My name is Megan, I am majoring in Interpersonal Communication because I find the field so incredibly interesting and want to go to grad school for something within the field, possibly counseling? I have loved all of my communication classes so far and am happy I found the right major for me after switching 3 times.

The most important thing I've learned at UNI is to do things that scare you. One of my friends quotes (I think Eleanor Roosevelt?) all the time and says "do one thing everyday that scares you." I really think this is such a good way to live, because we grow from conquering things that scare us. Whether it's taking a class you think is way over your head, or applying for a job at your dream company...you have to go for it!

In 5 years, I have no idea where I'll be. I am kind of lost as to where I am going at the moment, but I am thinking that I want to go into counseling. However, I've changed my mind like 5 times so far, so we will see where I'm led! I hope to still be close to my family and possibly be starting a family of my own!

My passion is music, I love singing.

  9. My Name is Cory. I am majoring in Genearl Communications because I feel it will give me a solid general background to enter the work force with.

The most important thing that I have learned while being at UNI is to allow other people to help you out. Let them share their connections and resources, instead of trying to do everything on your own.

In five years, I want to be flying some sort of an aircraft. Whether it be a crop duster, corporate plane, airline, or flying fighters with my Air National Guard unit.

My big passion is flying, does not matter what typle of aircraft or if I am at the controls or just along from the ride.

  11. Hey there, I'm Spencer. I am majoring in Political Comminucations because I love Political Science and have a passion for the areas of Public Relations and Advertising and this major seems to reconcile these two areas nicely. Hopefully I can merge them someday by obtaining a career at a company like Fleishman Hillard or Ketchum International by representing political figures in a PR capacity.

The biggest thing UNI has taught me, is to always be rolling with the punches. The thing is to keep your eye on the long term goal whilst always adjusting to the daily changes in your life.

In five years, I want to be married to my fiancee and working on my aforementioned goal of representing national (hopefully) political figures in a public relations position in an agency setting.

My passion in life is water. I spent my weekends for the last 21 years on Clear Lake in Northern Iowa and water can do amazing things to the human spirit. Aside from the life aquatic, I love comedy and laughing from the likes of Eddie Izzard to vintage Steve Martin and Jerry Seinfeld stand-up.

  12. My Name Is Andrew Heard I am majoring in Communications because I feel that there are so many fields you can go into with a communications degree because we all communicate every day in some form!
The most important thing I have learned so far at UNI has been taking advantage of oppourtunities, when I was a freshman I never really got involved in much and just sat around untill a good friend of mind got me in the right set of mind to start doing more in college and having a wonderful experience!

I Can see myself in 5 years holding a steady job during the week and having a family to help take care of during nights and weekends.

My biggest passion is Jazz Music, I am in Jazz Band 1 at UNI and it has been a wonderful experience. I play the saxophone, I also play many gigs in the Cedar Falls are as well as Des Moines. Music is just so much fun to me and I hope to still do some sort of playing later on down the road. I am also a passionate sports fan, I love watching college football and the NFL. I also enjoy reading a wide variety of books, Im not really particular on genre just anything that sparks my interest I will read!

  13. My name is Kelsey and I am majoring in General Communications with a Marketing minor. It has taken me about 3 years to figure out what I am doing with my life. Communications is the most crucial asset a person can grasp onto, being able to build strong relationships with people is something that I have always been good at and studying communications will only help me build this quality.

Attending UNI is something that I will always thank myself for doing. Becoming close to fellow students and teachers is necessary and I cannot see that happening as well at a huge university.

It has always been a dream of mine to be a mountain woman. So in 5 years I will probably be living in a homemade tent in the Colorado Rockies. Hopefully I will find a man who shares this dream with me :) In all honesty, Colorado is my dream state I frequent there at least twice a year and I have been talking to a recruiter with Northwestern Mutual so hopefully I will have a job waiting for me as graduation comes.

My passions and talents are laughing, making people laugh, being healthy, and surrounding myself with amazing people. Music is also something that has a huge place in my heart.

  14. My name is Erin. I'm a General Communication major, with a Graphic Design minor. I've changed my major about 3 times now and feel like I have finally found a field that is versatile enough to challenge and excite me for the rest of my life. It is useful in so many ways, and I'm looking forward to exploring some of the career possibilities that this degree will help me attain.

My UNI experience has had its ups and downs, mostly because it took me so long to figure out what I wanted to study. I look at some of the trials that I have experienced as blessings, however, that have forced me to take a closer look at who I am as a person and some of my goals for the future. I have realized what a true gift a college education can be and that it is not something to be taken for granted.

I'm not really sure what I see myself doing in 5 years. At this point, my life could go in so many different directions. I don't really want to be stuck in a cubicle all day every day though, so hopefully my future job will enable me to have some versatility in that area. I am also definitely a city girl, so I'm sure whatever I'm doing, it will be in a big city somewhere warmer than Iowa! No offense to any die-hard Iowans :)

I think I'm a pretty creative person and art has always played a big part in my life. I especially love to draw and make collages out of random stuff. I am passionate about coffee, music, and my guilty pleasure is anything related to celebrity gossip!

  15. My name is Alie Muller and I am majoring in Communications.

I have learned so much since I moved to the University of Northern Iowa. I have been fortunate enough to live in a great small town, but after moving into a larger area I have had to realize that I am stubborn and can be judgmental. Since starting college I have had to break down those barriers which held me back. Now that I am more open to new people, ideas, and opinions I have been able to see the world and cultures in completely different settings! I am lucky to have grown up in Pella, Iowa but I am extremely grateful for the change that UNI has brought to me!

In five years I hope to have a great connection with my workplace and job where I feel I am challenged. I also hope that I have traveled more extensively to meet new people and learn more about their cultures. Lastly but probably most important I hope that I still am close with my family and friends.

I am passionate about communicating, which would make sense with my major, but I love getting to know people and learn about their lives and experiences. I also love reading most biography's or about history and psychology. I am talented in music. Ten years ago I would have told you I hated the piano, but to this day it is one of my most peaceful activities. I enjoy listening to music and singing or playing an instrument.

  16. Hey Everyone! I'm Keisha. I'm 20 years old and a junior. I'm majoring in Electronic Media. I would love to work in a recording studio. I love music. I love making it and listening to it. I enjoy finding new bands and learning about them.
The most important thing I've learned at UNI so far is to love life and make the best of it. I didn't adjust well my first year of college but after I started making an effort to make things better it all turned around. Now I love college and I've met some really amazing people here and I am so thankful for them. I've also learned that it's important to actually go to class haha.
In five years I hope to be working in a recording studio somewhere. I really have no idea where I will end up. I would like to move out of Iowa for a while, just to be somewhere new and make myself a little uncomfortable as crazy as that sounds. I don't know what my future brings but I know it will be amazing.

  17. My name is Amy. I am majoring in General Communication with a Minor in Public Relations. When deciding my major, let’s just say it took quite a while and I stressed every minute of it. I choose General Communication due to the wide variety of things I could accomplish with this major. Public Relations because I find the field very competitive and I am always up and ready for a challenge.

One of the most important things I have learned at UNI would have to be; learning to relax. I stress about everything! Coming to UNI taught me that stressing doesn’t solve anything and there are some things in life you can’t change or control.

Life is like a roller coaster and I see myself doing a lot of things in the next 5 years, but one thing I would like to accomplish, is to be successful in my career. I would like to find myself traveling more, but school debt will be raining on that parade. Lastly I would like to try out a new state, there are way too many corn fields and I hate everything about it. Yes, call me crazy or weird, but I dislike sweet corn with a passion. So a state without corn would be nice.

My passion would have to be ice cream; you didn’t say what kind of passion or talent. So for both my passion and talent it would have to be ice cream. I talk about it all the time, passion and consume a lot of it at one time, talent. I know it’s kind of a silly answer, but I am a fun and who wouldn’t want to have this kind of passion and talent.

  18. Hey I'm Jessica! I am majoring in Interpersonal Communication and a minor in Spanish. I am majoring in Interpersonal Communications because I have found that I absolutely love learning about relationships between individuals and how every little thing makes a difference in how the relationship grows or deteriorates, and I really enjoy seeing it play out in life. I also enjoy different cultures and found myself taking spanish last semester found a love for the language.

I have learned so much at UNI. I think one of the top things I have learned is just more about myself and how I can grow in my own individuality. There are so many things to experience in life and I can choose whatever path I want to go down. UNI has helped me in this journey as it has so many opportunities to take advantage of. The world is so much bigger than my little farm I grew up in, in the middle of no where with a small school. I can't wait to expereince more!

In five years I'm not really sure what I want to do. I really just want to do whatever God wants me to do and I trust that He will get me there. For right now I like the idea of working in a missions organization maybe in a Spanish speaking country, or just doing a job that will help people succeed in their life and making it their own.

I like to do a lot of things. I absolutely love talking about spirituality, God, and the Bible. Music is another passion I have and singing in UNI Women's Chorus. Lastly I have been out of the country twice and loved seeing how big the world is! I have a great interest in different cultures and who they really are.

  19. SYDNEY:
I am Sydney and I am majoring in general communication. The most important thing I've learned at UNI so far is that there are sooo many kinds of people out there. I come from a very small town in ne Iowa, and there is not a very vast culture. At UNI I have met people from all over and have been able to learn not only about different cultures, but how these people see things much differently than I do. This is a great experience because it has opened my eyes a lot, and made me more open to the ideas of other people and taught me to treat everyone equally with respect. In 5 years, I would like to have a job I love, and hopefully be thinking about starting a family. I don't know yet for sure what I will be doing, but I just hope I love it! My passions include spending time with my family and close friends, and reading as much as I can when I have time! I guess the only talent I have that I can think of off hand is that I can play the piano. A mix between and passion and talent of mine would be working with kids, because I love to and I seem to be good at it!
