Mashup-Ryan Stefani

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dO4MRJFTyXo

My mash up was intended to show irony amongst the materialistic standards set for women's appearances. I chose to feature the Dove Real Beauty Campaign commercial, which was designed to show how women are "evolved" through the use of products and PhotoShop to gain an appearance not achievable in nature. I then mixed in video clips and still images of other really done-up women with a lot of makeup exhibiting their very feminine characteristics. I then combined these clips with a song by India Arie, "Because I am a Queen," in which she describes how she does not feel the need to get all done up to conform to society's standards for very feminine women, but rather bases her life and self on her mind and spirit. This is where I feel I add value in my mash up and feel it would be protected by Fair Use--I contrast the messages being sent from the audio to the messages being sent by the video.

  1. Thank you. As a woman, that's all I can say.

At least there's one male out there that understands how hard it is to live up to the "beautiful" standards society sets for us today.
I'm going to admit that I'm really not sure if it could stand up to fair use because it's sort of just using photos to reinforce the point of the dove ad, but hey, i could be wrong. I still love it.

Wonderful idea. Really shows what we go through to look good for this stupid world. And believe me, if the world didn't want us to look like that, we wouldn't put on our "face" every day.

  2. Really good idea! The song was a perfect fit for the irony. It was a good idea to mashup up the dove video with the other clips to show how distorted our ideas about beauty really are. This mashup really works for me, not only because I am woman, but because I think it is so important to know that beauty isn't just what "they" tell us it is. This would hold up in court because you arranged the clips in your own way to make your own statement.

  3. I have to agree with everyone else in saying that I love this idea! The way the musics message is so sharply contrasted with the images of high maintenance women who are going to extremes to paint and mold themselves beautiful is also great. The song here, is clearly transformed. One question I had at first was whether the use of "distortion of beauty" video clips was really transformed, however it seems to be since it contrasts so sharply with the lyrics. Altogether, it's a great statement that questions how society has and is defining beauty.

  4. I agree with everything that everyone has said. It is so sad how young women feel these days based on what they see in the media and the problems that arise. Eating disorders, self-esteem issues, relational problems and much more. I like that you brought 'Dove' into play because they change their women just like any other ad company, they just use thicker, curvier women.

  5. Ryan, thanks for this :) I know we had similar ideas, but like you said, we took different angles. I think that you made your point very well, the song was a great choice to contrast the portrayals of beauty that the other clips showed. The Dove campaign is really interesting because they have this campaign for real beauty- but it would be really interesting to find out how much they "touch up" their models. They are still in the ad business, so it's highly unlikely that these women are portrayed completely naturally. The irony was really established between the magazine and model beauty clips and the song. I feel like the song and the dove clips were probably making the same point, but you did use several different other images that did make contrasting points. Overall, great concept!
