WIKI Derik

Wikipedia for me is simply a website used for small tidbits of information when I don't want to waste time trying to sort through other articles. The set up is nice because it is like an outline so one is able to pinpoint what they are searching for and click it and begin reading. I have also used the bibliography portion of it when I needed one additional source and most times it's been helpful. Although everyone knows never to use it as a source for a project at least one can compare information when using the bib.

Overall I'm not going to say that Wikipedia can NEVER conquer expertise, but I highly doubt it can. It could if there is some kind of screening for who is able to change written material and creating a system similar to that would be beneficial. As long as it's been the way it has though makes me realize it's probably never going to change for the better. People know what they are going to get when they use Wikipedia-information written by seventh graders. I found that point interesting because my English teacher in high school told me to dumb down one of my opinion papers and write it as if kindergarten students were my target audience. I was shocked that Wikipedia is the 17th most popular site, but a lot of people including me do need small doses of information. I'm not going to lie though some of the so-called facts are ridiculous, a friend from high school was bored one day and made a stupid irrelevant point about unicorns because he saw a segment on Comedy Central about them.

I can understand people giving up their time if they are forced to. Say a student is in charge of a computer lab for five hours and doesn't have class that day and is prepared for tomorrow's schedule. Only for that reason can I understand people wasting time on the Internet. I in no way do this or ever will. I like my friends, but don't always care to know what they are thinking or reading. I've told people it's dumb to post stuff like that on my facebook wall because I know where to find funny clips and if I wanted to waste my time I'd check it out myself. I have no problem talking about it when we're hanging out because it allows for feedback on the spot. Having someone leave it on my wall and me not respond for a week and then when I finally post a response the other person is absent for a week doesn't work for me. That's why I have a cell phone-if it is something that amazing call me I will answer then we can discuss it and so many more things!
