Fair use could be used in a film by presenting my creation to an audience that was not intended for another audience or by adding substantial value to the content.
For example, I could take a cartoon that was originally aimed at small children and add adult language and humor to gear the new video towards adults. This could result as a satire or parody that is no longer G rated. Another example would be to make a very serious subject being discussed in chipmunk voices. Again, this would be a parody that is aimed at another group.
Fair use is important to documentary makers because they must use real footage in order to get the information across. This can be difficult if the footage necessary is copyrighted. They must be sure to cite and reference the material to show that it is not their own.
