Video Mashup - Heather
The point of this mashup is to get the audience to question their image of a terrorist, who really is capable of committing terrorist acts? Is it just middle-eastern looking men? What about the clean cut, white man pictured would he really be questioned regarding that kind of behavior?
I have found that in the American world there is a tendency to classify all terrorist as Muslims and all Muslims as middle-eastern ethnicity. Frustrated with this, I have created this mashup to hopefully further the idea that terrorism is the use by ANY INDIVIDUAL/GROUP of violence to intimidate or coerce others. Everyone is equally capable of committing a terrorist act therefore we, as a whole, should refrain from stereotyping middle eastern and individuals who practice the Muslim religion. Terrorism, by definition is: the use of violence or threats to intimidate or coerce.
The use of both videos is justifiable under Fair Use for a variety of reasons. First, all of the media shown above was employed to make a critique of our cultures view of terrorists. It was used to illustrate that the media tends to portray terrorists only as Muslim, middle eastern men. Second, the small video portion that I used from the whole newscast was approximately two minutes long, out of that I cut and spliced it into less then one minute in length. Thus, the video used was changed by cutting and splicing together one longer clip into the shortest time frame necessary to still make the point. The other video and photograph I used were so minuet, and used for completely different purpose then their original reason. Lastly, and most importantly, the videos message was transformed from discussing an unexpected terrorist attack to who the suspected terrorists were, why, and who we usually blame “the Muslim monopoly”. The videos focus is to critique the social, political, and cultural idea that all terrorists are Muslims; forcing viewers to question their opinion of what a terrorist may look like.

I think this video was a good crique of this news segment. Maybe using other news stories or videos could have shown a more expansive and prevailing problem in the media's representation of terrorists. With Fair-use guidlines in mind, I like how you were able to shed light on the topic in a new way that differs from the shows intended use.
ReplyDeleteThis mash up has a great message to it. I would agree wholeheartedly with Heather in that many Americans definitely have a tendency to label people by what group they may appear to belong to on the outside, rather than taking the time to get to know them as individuals. In order to improve this mash up I would echo what Brett said-- more video clips intermixed could have made this mash up more powerful.
ReplyDeleteBased on my understanding of Fair Use, this video should stand up in court. It seems like Heather added value to the content, and made it her own creation.

The idea behind the mashup is great , however the mashup itself seemed to thin. I felt there wasnt enough mashing going on between the videos, but naybe thats just me. Overall I did like the video and the very real idea behind it.
ReplyDeleteI believe this video would hold up in court because there is origianlity mashed within the original broadcast that was able to let people look at it in a somewhat different light.
