If I were to ever make a film it would have to be a comedy, and the great thing about comedy is you can use a great deal of materiel under the auspices of satire and parody. The biggest example that comes to mind happened when I was back in middle school and the Weird Al album Running with Scissors came out. The lawsuit that sprung from that album was over the song 'Amish Paradise'. Al had been denied permission by Snoop Dog to use his song, but since it was parody he went ahead and used it anyway. In the court case Al was protected under the parody section of fair use.
Say I were making a monster movie parody, something along the lines of the old school 1980's Godzilla movies. Anyone think that a few WWE clips would add a lot to the foam rubber mockups who are doing the same moves only with buildings under foot?
Another parody example could be pulled from the Scary Movie series, they make fun of pretty much anything in current pop culture, and their strategy would work well for being able to work music by current artists into a film.
As far as great mashups on youtube only one comes to mind and I'm delighted to be able to share the brain bending pain of it with the class.
