Today’s copyright laws regarding music are almost comical, just like Mcleod’s example about Donald Trump trademarking the phrase “You’re Fired”. Not only are people overly using the law to protect their ideas, they are even using them to protect common phrases like “You’re Fired”. I’m sorry, but people like Donald Trump need to get over themselves, if they think they coin the term “You’re fired”. That phrase is used in businesses all over, are we supposed to censor ourselves just in case we might get sued for using the phrase. Even more are we not allowed to gesture in the manor that he did on The Apprentice.
Music is copywrited just as heavily as this example, which is as I stated almost comical. It seems to me that one day possible songs will not be possible, because most phrases will not be able to be used as lyrics. It is so frustrating to think that some of the world’s greatest artists are not able to make art due to today’s laws. People are unable to elaborate or glamorize other’s work just because of the overpowering laws in today’s society because it is classified as “pirating”.
Mcleod talks about copywrite laws enabling works of art to be finished just because the copywrite holders are gone. This is just ridiculous, because if the holders are gone, how could it possibly be a problem. This just makes these types of situations to be at a standstill and to me that is sad. To add to that many archives won’t even keep the work if they don’t have a copywrite holder. This means that useful information or great works go to waste or are completely deleted due to our laws.
To conclude, I have to state that I believe the laws are hindering our ability to fully express and evolve our cultural ideals and abilities. We are destroying works or possibilities of works by following and using our copywrite laws.
