Mashup - Lauren

The purpose of my mashup is to show that things aren't always as they seem. Never take something at face value. Always question. This video has footage of Shirley Temple from multiple movies such as "The Little Princess" and "Curly Top". Shirley Temple was discovered when she was 3 years old and by the time she was 10 she had been in 40 motion pictures. The little acting, singing and dancing girl was always portrayed as the nice, sweet, innocent girl that didn't do anything wrong and loved everybody. But I'm here to say that things aren't always that way. I made her the star of a horror movie, instead.
I think this mashup could be justified as fair use because it creates discussion and it's completely transforming something. It doesn't just take the ideas of others, it takes what you think you know and it flips it upside down. It's just a remix that boggles the mind with completely new ways to think about things sprouting from a completely new idea.

  1. I like that you used all clips from the same person - a recognizable one, at that - so that the audience will be able to grasp the idea that you are attempting to leave people with. The extra sounds that you chose to mix in with it were very effective in driving the point home. Yes, I think this could hold up for Fair Use because you are presenting it in an entirely different way.

  2. I used to watch her when I would go to my grandmother's house. I love the song choice, it's so creepy. You really did make her a star of a horror film, and that was a creative take on this assignment. I love how original this is and for that reason, I think it would totally hold up in court.

  3. I think this a another great example of a mash-up. It completely transforms the content- no one would expect to see Shirley Temple exhibitied in such a way. The music was extremely effective and showed how audio when used like this can almost exclusively transform video. I really liked the audio you chose- it accomplished exactly what you wanted it to. Your video makes a completely different point than any of the video clips were meant to make.

  4. Lauren, I love it!
It does the job of transforming Shirley Temples image, this would have been her publicists worst nightmare. It's unfortunate she was never in a horror movie...
This video could be justified as fair use for multiple reasons. First, it completely transforms the original meaning of the movies by taking them out of their original context, combining them with other Shirley Temple movie clips, and coming out with an entirely different movie idea. Nice work, you really worked out the little kinks and it flows beautifully.

  6. I absolutely loved the Audio track you chose to pair with the video components. (a modern twist on a classic face) Your mash-up was constructed in a very clever way. I think you were able to create a creative work that could be held under the fair-use guidelines. I thought you were able to create an entertaining mashu-up that sheds a new light on a familiar topic and charecter.
