Mashup - Jessica

When I was little I wanted to grow up and make a difference in the world. I wanted to be an activist for change. I was inspired to make this video after having learned about the poverty in the world and wanted to change it anyway I can. It’s all around us in every part of the world and even in our own backyard. With the little money I have, I’m trying to make a difference. I’m sponsoring a child in an Indian orphanage. I just don’t feel right sitting here having all these luxuries while millions of people are in a horrible environment of war or dying from starvation in the world. If there’s something I can do to change this I will. That leads me to my main point in creating this video. I chose to critique the fact that there are millions of people with a lot of money that they are just keeping for greedy reasons when humans, people with souls, minds, and hearts, are barely getting by or not even getting by at all. I mixed up images of children in Uganda fighting a war that they don’t want to fight but are forced to (Invisible Children Organization), a little kid swimming in money, a song about money making the world go round, and two versions of we are the world, one in English and one in Spanish. To me this represents how we all are the world and different cultures, from all nations and together we need to stop being greedy and help our fellow humans to succeed in this world. That can be through spending our money or even using your voice to be an activist for change and bettering our society. My question to you: will you put greed of money, material things, and luxury items as more important and worth your investment than a human soul, one that can make a difference in this world and change it for the better?

I believe this is fair use because I am taking creative videos and music and creating a new video with my own point and question to pose to society. I’m not stealing their work, because my purpose is entirely different. It is as we have talked before in the class, using what society gives us to make a new project, pose a new question, and hopefully better society with my ideas. I am hopefully making you think differently about our purpose as who we are the world. More than just our class or the University, there are millions of people out there that we can help with the knowledge and resources we are given.

  1. Jessica,
I love the idea behind your mashup; specifically in the materialistic society we live in. Often, we do have a personal and society-wide clash with wanting to acquire and store up mass quantities of wealth, while at the same time wanting to help others. At first, i had to question whether it really falls under Fair Use because it's an assortment of different music, with videos created to go with them - which seemed to me at first to be only furthering the ideas the original artists and photographers had. Upon further viewings I realized however that the different songs and images clash with each other in such a different way that this transforms the artwork to bring about a new creation which challengers the audience in a different way.

  2. Suggestions: the portion where you have the "money, money, money" clip really fast is choppy, could you lengthen that part, or change it up in a different way?

  3. This is a great mash up. Not only do I love Justin Bieber but I like how you brought the Spanish speaking into your work. This is all so true, we do live in a society where often times the most important aspect is wealth and how much we make and people deny that.
